Jonesboro Sun on our flooding

"In Newport and Jackson County the White River remained at its highest in several years as excess water from Norfork and Bull Shoals lakes, both of which flow into the White, had to be released over the weekend. With both the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers at high levels, there is no place for the White and its tributaries to drain into, and that is one of the major causes of the flooding that is occurring along its length, officials say. Jonesboro Sun on our flooding

""Jackson County Judge Kerry Tharpe of Tuckerman said the levees throughout his county are holding up in spite of the heavy rains last week. Tharpe said the county has been helped in recent days by officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“They have been helping us. They are doing hourly monitoring of the levees,” Tharpe said. Tharpe said the county has also stockpiled more than 7,000 sandbags that will be used if and when the waters begin to rise again. Also, Tharpe said his county continues to see water covering county roads throughout the county. “We have water on (Highway) 14 and Arkansas 37 from Cord to Tuckerman,” Tharpe said. “We will just have to wait until the water goes down before we can repair the county roads.” "
